Position Summary
The Pacific Northwest College of Art at Willamette University (PNCA) is seeking a highly energetic, inclusive, and committed educator and professional to teach courses and contribute to the ongoing development of the undergraduate Animated Arts program at the College. We welcome candidates who possess a demonstrated worldview and cultural competency to support teaching and mentoring undergraduate students of varied backgrounds, abilities, perspectives, social identities and gender expressions.
Animated Arts, designed for Portland’s versatile creative community, supports both industry and indie outcomes. Built on a solid set of animation skills, students explore materials, technologies, techniques, and methods from concept to production. Faculty are versed in the teaching principles of animation, able to present the history of the moving image in the context of a broad engagement with film and fine art, and supportive of experimentation in a variety of media, technology, production methods, and narrative structures.
We are inviting applications for a full time faculty member who will make a sustained and vital contribution to the future of our program at a regional, national and international level, who will contribute to our undergraduate Animated Arts Program and will both foster a pedagogical approach to animation that is practice-based and informed by critical perspectives that support applied engagements with interdisciplinary approaches and innovative practices. The faculty member will be encouraged to engage in and demonstrate abilities in diverse animation genres and technologies, studio practices, and/or fields of academic inquiry.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the College and larger University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: developing and enhancing curriculum, advising students, participation in campus and University-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, building external partnerships and industry relationships, and maintaining a vibrant creative practice in the region and beyond.
Overview of Duties
Teach five courses a year, both which would include core department offerings as well as newly developed courses in area of expertise.
Help maintain instructional standards and outcomes across curriculum and syllabi.
Foster a pedagogical approach to animation that is practice-based and informed by critical perspectives that support applied engagements with interdisciplinary approaches and innovative practices.
Build and develop curriculum in conjunction with faculty aligned with University priorities.
Contribute to the oversight of the Animation labs, equipment, and facilities.
Mentor students.
Foster industry relations and external partnerships.
Provide academic and career advising.
Participate in admissions recruitment, open houses, portfolio preparation, and industry events.
Work with the Department Chair and faculty in development of department policies, curriculum content, and evaluation methods.
Participate in faculty governance, academic committees and campus life.
Keep up to date with professional and industry best practices.
Foster an inclusive, equitable and diverse learning environment.
Minimum Qualifications
MFA or equivalent professional experience
Evidence of successful teaching experience
Demonstrated experience in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic teaching environment.
Ability to reside in Oregon by the first day of employment or otherwise perform work primarily in Oregon.
Qualified Candidate will have several Preferred Qualifications
An earned MFA, or terminal degree, in Animation, Art, or closely-related field from an accredited institution
Evidence of successful collegiate teaching experience in Animation or related fields. Preference given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following: Traditional 2D and Digital 2D Animation, Digital Hybrid Media,, Stop-motion Animation, Stop-motion Puppet Fabrication, Gaming, 3D CGI, creative coding, storyboarding, and editing.
Evidence of personal or critical expression with animation as an art and storytelling medium.
Demonstrated professional experience in either a studio or freelance project(s) with a client in one or more of the following areas; 2D animation, 3D animation, 3D character modeling, rigging, texturing, stop-motion, compositing, Storyboarding, concept work, layout, Character design.
Demonstrated application in cutting-edge industry mediums: VR, AR, hybrid tech, gaming, visual effects, motion graphics, UX, creative coding, apps.
Ability to present the history of the moving image in the context of a broad engagement with film, fine art, and media studies and supportive of experimentation in a variety of media, production methods, and narrative structures.
Evidence of technical and meritorious advancements in their own field of professional practice.
Active member of a professional community of creatives. Working knowledge and relationships within the field of Animation.
