The American Heart Associations Editorial Internship provides college students with an opportunity for hands-on writing, editing, and research experience to promote the American Heart Association programs and activities and to educate the public about heart and brain diseases. Our internships offer the opportunity to gain professional experience with a national non-profit organization, further develop presentation and multimedia communication skills, and foster skills in team collaboration.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 5/20/24-8/9/24
  • Remote position
  • Salary is $23 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment.
  • Opportunity to explore a career path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization.
  • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management.
  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume and enriches your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

Responsibilities:
  • Creating a broad range of online and print content to educate patients or promote the American Heart Association, including:

o Feature articles and profiles

o Patient information pieces

o Social media posts

o Video and podcast scripts

o Web captions and blurb

  • Rewriting or copy-editing content for printed publications, heart.org, stroke.org, and related sites, slide presentations, and other media.
  • Research topics related to heart and brain disease, the Associations programs, and The American Heart Association history.
  • Fact-checking copy before publication.
  • Other editorial tasks as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Writing samples are required.
  • Journalism training and demonstrated excellence in written communication skills, ideally for multiple media types.
  • Strong editing skills and thorough knowledge of AP style.
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate and nonprofit environment and assume responsibility for communications projects and programs from inception through completion.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection.
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs./wk., Monday-Friday.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For remote roles, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
